
MUST Roadmap 2050
Introduction
Established in 1996, Misr University for Science and Technology (MUST) has, since its inception, embedded environmental sustainability within its institutional vision. A key manifestation of this commitment is the development of an extensive green zone within the campus, covering approximately 40,000 m², representing nearly 40% of the total campus area. This reflects MUST’s early and sustained dedication to ecological responsibility and sustainable campus planning.
In recognition of the escalating global climate crisis and the critical role of higher education institutions in addressing it, MUST adopts a firm and proactive stance on climate action. The University is committed to contributing meaningfully to national and global efforts to mitigate climate change.
In alignment with its overarching Sustainability Policy and ongoing Climate Action initiatives, MUST hereby commits to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
As part of this commitment, the University establishes the following interim targets to be achieved by 2030 a 20% reduction in Scope (1)and Scope (2) emissions, and a 10% reduction in Scope (3) emissions.
This commitment reflects a comprehensive, institution-wide approach to carbon management, encompassing campus operations, energy use, procurement practices, transportation, and broader value-chain activities. MUST will ensure that progress is guided by measurable indicators, transparent reporting, and continuous improvement in line with international best practices
1. Scope (1) and Scope (2) Emissions Reduction by 2030
- MUST is committed to achieving substantial reductions in its direct and energy-related greenhouse gas emissions as part of its pathway toward net-zero by 2050.
- MUST commits to a 20% reduction in Scope (1) emissions by 2030, encompassing direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by the University, including on-site fuel combustion, university-owned vehicles, and operational activities.
- In parallel, MUST commits to a 20% reduction in Scope (2) emissions by 2030, addressing indirect emissions associated with the consumption of purchased electricity, heating, and cooling.
- The achievement of these targets will be supported by a structured and comprehensive approach, including:
- Conducting institution-wide energy audits to assess consumption patterns; o Increasing the adoption of renewable energy sources, where feasible;
- Implementing energy efficiency measures across buildings, infrastructure, and operations; o Enhancing energy management systems to monitor and optimize performance.
2. Scope (3) Emissions Reduction by 2030
MUST recognizes the importance of addressing emissions beyond its direct operational boundaries and is committed to managing its broader environmental footprint.
- The University commits to a 10% reduction in Scope (3) emissions by 2030, encompassing indirect emissions across the value chain, including transportation, procurement, waste management, and other associated activities.
- This target reflects MUST’s commitment to extending its sustainability efforts across all aspects of its operations and influence. It will be pursued through:
- Promoting sustainable procurement practices; o
- Encouraging low-carbon transportation options for staff and students; o
- Improving waste reduction, recycling, and resource efficiency measures;
- Engaging stakeholders and partners to support collective emissions reduction efforts.
The Roadmap and Long-Term Path to Net-Zero by 2050
1. Strategy and Plan
- MUST’s strategic plan, led by the Sector of Community Services and Environmental Development Affairs, together with the responsible entities, establishes a roadmap comprising specific actions and strategies to achieve emissions reduction targets within a defined timeline.
- The roadmap and its implementation will involve coordinated collaboration across all levels of the University, engaging Colleges, staff, students, and stakeholders.
2. Behavioral Improvement
- Under the theme “Small Actions, Big Impact,” MUST will actively engage its community to raise awareness and foster a culture of sustainability through education, conferences, and campaigns.
- Student teams, such as “Greenish MUST,” along with individuals, will be empowered to lead environmental initiatives.
3. Renewable Energy
- MUST is committed to expanding the use of renewable energy sources, with particular emphasis on solar energy.
4. Scientific Research and Innovation
- MUST has established a “Sustainability Center” and will, in the near future, develop it into a “Sustainability, Climate, and Energy Center” to serve as the focal point for the implementation of the Net-Zero Carbon action plan.
5. Responsibility and Accountability
MUST is committed to the annual implementation of the Net-Zero Carbon roadmap, addressing both the short-term target (2030), in alignment with Egypt’s Vision 2030, and the long-term target (2050), through:
- Regular annual carbon emissions reporting to ensure progress in mitigation and reduction efforts;
- Engaging all stakeholders in monitoring and supporting the progress of MUST’s Net-Zero Carbon roadmap;
- Implementing MUST CAP (MUST Climate Action Plan) as the annual strategic framework reflecting progress towards the 2030 and 2050 targets.

MUST is committed to fulfilling all stated commitments in alignment with Egypt’s Vision 2030 in the short term and the 2050 long-term objectives, in accordance with international directions.
